7th Pay Commission Salary Calculator – How to Use & What It Calculates

7th Pay Commission Salary Calculator: How It Works and What It Calculates

If you are a central government employee or a job aspirant trying to understand what your in-hand salary will be, this free calculator does all the work for you. Enter your pay level and basic pay — and it instantly shows you a complete salary breakdown with DA, HRA, TA, PF, NPS, and your exact net take-home amount.

What is the 7th Pay Commission?

The 7th Pay Commission (7th CPC) is the latest pay revision for central government employees in India, implemented from 1 January 2016. It replaced the 6th Pay Commission structure and introduced a new Pay Matrix with 18 levels — from Level 1 (basic pay ₹18,000) to Level 18 (₹2,50,000).

Every central government employee — from a Multi-Tasking Staff (MTS) at Level 1 to an IAS officer at Level 10 and above — is paid according to this pay matrix. Their total salary consists of several components, all of which this calculator computes automatically.

What does this calculator include?

This salary calculator covers every component of a central government employee’s salary package:

ComponentWhat it isHow it is calculated
Basic pay The fixed pay for your pay level as per the 7th CPC pay matrix You enter this directly — it is shown on your pay slip
DA — Dearness Allowance Allowance to compensate for inflation, revised every 6 months Current DA × basic pay. DA is currently 53% (Jan 2025)
HRA — House Rent Allowance Allowance for housing cost, based on the city you are posted in 27% (X city), 18% (Y city), or 9% (Z city) of basic pay
TA — Transport Allowance Fixed allowance for daily commute to office ₹7,200 / ₹3,600 / ₹1,350 / ₹900 per month + DA on TA
PF — Provident Fund Mandatory savings deducted every month 10% of basic pay deducted from salary
NPS — National Pension System Pension contribution for employees who joined after January 2004 10% of (basic + DA) deducted monthly
CGEIS Central Government Employees Group Insurance Scheme ₹30 to ₹240 per month depending on your pay group
Net in-hand salary What you actually receive in your bank account each month Gross salary minus all deductions above
Note about income tax: Income tax is not included in this calculator because it varies significantly from person to person — based on your tax regime (old or new), investments under 80C, 80D, home loan, and HRA exemption. Use a separate income tax calculator to estimate your tax liability.

Real-world salary example — RBI Grade B Officer (Level 10)

Example: Level 10, Basic pay ₹56,100, X-city (Delhi/Mumbai), Level 9+ TA, NPS, DA 53%

Basic pay₹56,100
DA @ 53%₹29,733
HRA @ 27% (X city)₹15,147
TA (₹7,200 + DA on TA)₹11,016
Gross salary₹1,11,996
PF deduction (10% of basic)−₹5,610
NPS deduction (10% of Basic+DA)−₹8,583
CGEIS (Level 10 — Group A)−₹120
Net in-hand salary≈ ₹97,683

This is before income tax deduction. Depending on tax regime and investments, actual take-home for an RBI Grade B officer at entry level will typically be between ₹85,000 and ₹95,000 per month in hand.

Understanding HRA city categories

House Rent Allowance depends entirely on which city you are posted in. The government has divided India into three categories:

  • X cities (27% HRA): Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Bengaluru — the six largest metros
  • Y cities (18% HRA): State capitals and cities with a population of 5 lakh or more — includes Pune, Jaipur, Lucknow, Ahmedabad, Chandigarh, Bhopal and many others
  • Z cities (9% HRA): All other cities, towns, and rural postings
If you are living in government accommodation provided by your department — in a government quarter or staff colony — your HRA is reduced to a nominal amount and the licence fee for the quarter is deducted instead. In that case, the HRA shown by this calculator does not apply.

Understanding DA — Dearness Allowance

Dearness Allowance (DA) is revised twice a year — once in January (effective from January 1) and once in July (effective from July 1). It is calculated based on the All India Consumer Price Index (AICPI) and is announced by the Union Cabinet.

The current DA rate is 53% effective from January 2025. If the government announces a new DA hike after you read this, you can update the DA rate field in the calculator to get the latest figure.

NPS vs OPS — which applies to you?

  • NPS (National Pension System): Applies to all central government employees who joined service on or after 1 January 2004. Under NPS, 10% of your (basic + DA) is deducted every month as your contribution, and the government adds another 14% as its contribution. The combined amount is invested and builds your retirement corpus.
  • OPS (Old Pension Scheme): Applies to employees who joined before 1 January 2004. Under OPS, there is no NPS deduction. Instead, you receive a defined pension of 50% of your last drawn basic pay at retirement.

Frequently asked questions

Is this calculator applicable for state government employees?
This calculator is specifically built for central government employees paid as per the 7th Pay Commission pay matrix. Most state governments have adopted a similar structure, but DA rates, HRA percentages, TA amounts, and CGEIS may differ from state to state. Use this as a guide and verify exact figures with your state government’s pay rules.
Does this apply to PSU employees like NTPC, ONGC, or Coal India?
No. PSU employees are paid on the IDA (Industrial DA) pay scale — not the CDA (Central DA) scale used for government employees. IDA-scale salary calculations are different. This calculator covers only CDA-scale central government employees. A separate PSU salary calculator for IDA scales will be available soon on PSU Jobs India.
My pay slip shows a different amount. Why?
There could be several reasons — your department may pay additional allowances not covered here (like CEA, risk allowance, washing allowance, night duty allowance, or uniform allowance), or you may have income tax deducted at source, professional tax, or recovery of advances. This calculator covers only the standard components applicable to all central government employees.
When will the 8th Pay Commission be implemented?
The Government of India has announced that the 8th Pay Commission will be constituted and its recommendations implemented. It is expected to be effective from 1 January 2026. Once the 8th CPC pay matrix is published, we will update this calculator with the new pay levels and revised DA/HRA/TA rates.
What is CGEIS and why is it deducted?
CGEIS stands for Central Government Employees Group Insurance Scheme. It is a mandatory insurance-cum-savings scheme for all central government employees. A small amount is deducted every month — ₹30 for Group C employees at lower levels, ₹60 for Group B, ₹120 for Group A, and ₹240 for senior Group A officers. This deduction provides life insurance cover and a savings fund that is paid out at retirement.
How often does DA change and how do I update the calculator?
DA is revised twice a year — usually announced in March (for January arrears) and September (for July arrears). When a new DA rate is announced, simply change the DA rate field in the calculator above to the new percentage. The salary will instantly recalculate with the updated DA.
