1. What is IGIDR — and why it is special
Indira Gandhi Institute of Development Research (IGIDR) is one of India’s most prestigious economics and development research institutions. Here is what makes it unique:
- Established by the Reserve Bank of India — and fully funded by RBI. This means it has exceptional financial stability, world-class research infrastructure, and deep connections to India’s monetary and economic policy apparatus
- Deemed University — recognised as a Deemed University under Section 3 of the UGC Act, meaning it can award its own PhD and MSc degrees
- Located in Mumbai — at Goregaon East, in a green residential campus, one of the most sought-after locations in India for academic research
- Top-ranked research institution — IGIDR is consistently ranked among the top economics research institutions in India, alongside ISI Delhi, ISI Kolkata, DSE, and IITs
- IIT/IIM equivalent pay — Faculty salaries follow 7th CPC pay scales applicable to IITs and IIMs — among the highest in Indian academia
- Campus accommodation — provided on campus in Goregaon, Mumbai — an extraordinary benefit given Mumbai’s rental costs

Visit igidr.ac.in/recruitment
Go to the official IGIDR recruitment portal. The faculty recruitment is a rolling advertisement — applications are accepted throughout 2026 with a nominal deadline of 31 December 2026. However, applications are screened during the first week of every month. Apply as early as possible for faster consideration. -
Submit online application with all required documents
Upload — a detailed cover letter explaining your research agenda and teaching interests, full academic CV with publication list, 3 best research papers or working papers, teaching statement (if applying for teaching roles), and passport-size photograph. No application through email or postal mail — online only. -
Arrange three confidential reference letters
You must provide names and contact details of three academic referees who can comment on your scholarly contributions and teaching ability. IGIDR contacts these referees directly for confidential letters. These should be senior academics — PhD supervisor, senior colleagues, or international collaborators who know your research well. -
Shortlisting and research presentation
