1. What is SSC IT Officer in the Indian Navy?

The Indian Navy recruits officers through two types of commissions — Permanent Commission (PC) and Short Service Commission (SSC). This recruitment is for Short Service Commission in the Executive Branch, Information Technology (IT) stream.

As an IT Officer in the Indian Navy, you will work on:

  • Information technology systems and networks used by the Navy
  • Cybersecurity and data protection
  • Software systems and digital infrastructure
  • IT administration at naval bases, ships, and establishments across India

It is a commissioned officer role — which means you will hold a gazetted rank, wear a uniform, and be addressed as an officer of the Indian Navy. You will be inducted at the rank of Sub Lieutenant.

SSC vs Permanent Commission: In SSC, you initially serve for 10 years. This can be extended by up to 4 more years in 2 terms of 2 years each, based on your performance and Navy requirements. The maximum you can serve under SSC is 14 years. After that, you have the option to apply for Permanent Commission if vacancies are available.

9. Selection process — how are candidates selected?

  1. Online Application and Shortlisting
You apply online at www.joinindiannavy.gov.in. Shortlisting is done based on normalised marks in your qualifying degree. Not everyone who applies is called for SSB. Only shortlisted candidates are informed by email or SMS.
  2. SSB Interview — 5 days
SSB stands for Services Selection Board. It is a 5-day residential interview process held at naval selection centres. It includes psychological tests, group tasks, group discussions, and a personal interview. This tests your overall personality, leadership potential, and suitability for service as an officer.
  3. Medical Examination
Candidates recommended by SSB must pass a medical examination at a designated naval hospital. The medical board’s decision is final and binding.
  4. Merit List and Final Selection
A final merit list is prepared based on SSB marks combined with educational qualification marks. Candidates on the merit list are offered a position subject to vacancies and police verification.
  5. Training at INA Ezhimala, Kerala
Selected candidates join the Indian Naval Academy (INA) at Ezhimala, Kerala for initial officer training starting January 2027. They are inducted at the rank of Sub Lieutenant.
Normalisation of marks: Shortlisting is done using normalised marks. This means your marks are adjusted using a formula to make them comparable across different universities and grading systems. If your university gives CGPA instead of percentage, a conversion formula is applied. Visit the official Navy website for the normalisation formula details.

10. How to apply

  1. Go to the official Indian Navy website
Visit www.joinindiannavy.gov.in — this is the only official website to apply. Do not apply through any other website or agent.
  2. Register with your email and mobile number
Create your account on the website. Keep your email ID and mobile number active throughout the entire selection process — all communications from the Navy will come on these.
  3. Fill in the application form carefully
Enter your personal details, educational qualifications, and other required information. Make sure everything is accurate — any false information found at any stage will result in immediate cancellation of your candidature.
  4. Upload documents
Upload your photograph and signature in the prescribed format. Keep all original documents ready — Class X and XII marksheets, degree certificate or final year hall ticket, date of birth proof, NCC certificate (if applicable), and CGPA conversion formula from your university (if applicable).
  5. Submit and take a printout
Submit the application. Once submitted, no changes can be made. Take a printout of the application. The application, once submitted, is final.

Apply online at the official Indian Navy website:

www.joinindiannavy.gov.in
No application fee: There is no application fee for this recruitment. You do not need to pay anything to apply. If anyone asks you to pay a fee to apply for an Indian Navy job, it is fraud — report it immediately.

11. Important rules to know before applying

  • You must be unmarried at the time of joining. Marriage during training leads to discharge and full refund of training costs.
  • Apply only once. Multiple applications from the same candidate will result in cancellation of all applications.
  • Do not change your email ID or mobile number during the entire selection process — all call letters and communications are sent electronically.
  • The merit list is based on normalised marks in your qualifying degree — so your academic performance matters for shortlisting.
  • Candidates with NCC Air Wing ‘C’ certificate may get a 5% relaxation in cut-off marks for SSB shortlisting (subject to meeting minimum qualifying criteria).
  • All information you provide in the application is considered final. If any information is found false at any stage — even after joining — your candidature will be cancelled and you may face further action.
  • The Indian Navy reserves the right to cancel this recruitment at any time without giving a reason.

12. Frequently asked questions

Can girls apply for Indian Navy SSC IT 2026?
Yes. This recruitment is open to both men and women. All eligibility conditions — age, qualification, medical — are the same for everyone.
I have a BCA + MCA. Am I eligible?
Yes. MCA with BCA as the undergraduate degree is specifically mentioned as an eligible qualification, provided you have a minimum of 60% overall marks in the MCA and 60% in English in Class X or XII.
I am in my final year of B.Tech Computer Science. Can I apply?
Yes. Final year students can apply. But your result must be out and you must have a minimum of 60% marks before you go for SSB interview or before joining — whichever is earlier. If you do not meet this at that stage, your candidature will be cancelled.
What is SSB? Is it difficult?
SSB stands for Services Selection Board. It is a 5-day residential selection process at an SSB centre. It includes psychological tests, group tasks, outdoor activities, and a personal interview. It tests your personality, communication, leadership, and team spirit. It is not an exam you can pass by just studying — it tests who you are as a person. Many candidates apply multiple times before clearing it.
I scored 58% in my B.Tech. Can I still apply?
No. The minimum requirement is 60% overall in your qualifying degree. 58% does not meet the eligibility criteria. You cannot apply for this recruitment.
My university gives CGPA. How is it converted to percentage?
If your university has its own CGPA-to-percentage conversion formula, that will be used. If not, the Navy uses a standard formula published on their website at www.joinindiannavy.gov.in/files/normalisation.pdf. Check this before applying to understand your converted marks.
Is there any application fee?
No. There is no application fee for this recruitment. Everything is free. If anyone asks you to pay money to apply for an Indian Navy job, it is a scam.
Where will I be posted after joining?
As an IT Officer in the Indian Navy, you can be posted at naval bases, shore establishments, or onboard ships anywhere in India. The Navy decides postings based on service requirements. You cannot choose your posting location.
