  • Indian nationals are eligible
  • Foreign nationals are also eligible
  • Candidates from all streams — Engineering, Science, Humanities, Management — may apply depending on the department
  • Both working professionals (Part-Time) and full-time students can apply under different schemes

4. PhD admission schemes — 5 types explained

NIT Kurukshetra offers PhD admission under five different schemes. Each scheme is for a different type of candidate — student, working professional, fellowship holder, or project-funded researcher. Read each one carefully and apply only under the scheme that matches your situation.

Scheme 1

Institute Scheme (Full-Time)

For candidates who get a Teaching Assistantship or Research Assistantship funded by the institute itself. These candidates typically receive a monthly stipend from NIT Kurukshetra for conducting research and assisting in teaching.

Scheme 2

CSIR-UGC NET-JRF Scheme

For candidates who have qualified CSIR-UGC NET with Junior Research Fellowship (JRF). The fellowship funding comes from CSIR or UGC — not the institute. This is one of the most sought-after PhD funding routes in India.

Scheme 3

Project Scheme

For candidates who will be funded through an externally funded research project at NIT Kurukshetra. The PhD is done as part of a sponsored project — the project PI (Principal Investigator) funds the candidate’s fellowship.

Scheme 4

Visvesvaraya Fellowship Scheme

For candidates selected under the Visvesvaraya PhD Scheme — a Government of India fellowship programme under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), specifically for PhD in Electronics, IT, and related fields.

Scheme 5

Full-Time Self-Financed

For candidates who fund their own PhD — no fellowship or assistantship from the institute. You bear all expenses yourself but get the same research environment, supervision, and degree as other schemes.

Scheme 6

Part-Time

For working professionals who want to pursue a PhD while continuing their current job. You are required to be employed in an organisation and conduct your research part-time. The PhD duration is longer under this scheme.

Which scheme should you apply under? If you have a CSIR/UGC-JRF — apply under Scheme 2. If you are already working — apply under Part-Time. If you have no fellowship and are not working — apply under Full-Time Self-Financed. If a faculty member at NIT Kurukshetra has already contacted you for a project — apply under Project Scheme. When in doubt, check the official notification or contact the institute directly.

8. Frequently asked questions

Do I need a GATE score to apply for PhD at NIT Kurukshetra?
It depends on the scheme you apply under. For the Institute Scheme (Teaching/Research Assistantship), a valid GATE score is typically required. For the CSIR-UGC JRF scheme, you need a JRF fellowship. For Self-Financed and Part-Time schemes, GATE may not be mandatory. Check the official notification for exact scheme-wise requirements.
Can I apply if I am currently working in a private company?
Yes — under the Part-Time PhD scheme, working professionals from private companies, government organisations, PSUs, and other institutions can apply. You continue your job while pursuing the PhD on a part-time basis. An employer’s No Objection Certificate (NOC) is typically required.
I have a CSIR-JRF. Which scheme should I apply under?
Apply under the CSIR-UGC NET-JRF Scheme. Your monthly stipend will be funded by CSIR/UGC through your fellowship — not by the institute. Make sure your JRF is currently valid and has not expired when you apply.
Is there any stipend for Self-Financed PhD students?
No. Self-Financed PhD candidates do not receive any stipend or fellowship from the institute. You bear all your own expenses. However, you get the same research supervision, lab access, and library facilities as other PhD scholars.
Can foreign nationals apply for this PhD admission?
Yes. NIT Kurukshetra has explicitly mentioned that both Indian and Foreign nationals can apply. Foreign nationals should refer to the specific conditions and eligibility requirements for foreign candidates mentioned in the official notification on the website.
What is the Visvesvaraya Fellowship Scheme?
The Visvesvaraya PhD Scheme is a Government of India fellowship programme run by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY). It provides financial support for PhD research in Electronics, IT, and related fields. Candidates who have already been selected under this scheme can apply to NIT Kurukshetra for admission under this category.
How long does a PhD take at NIT Kurukshetra?
The minimum duration for a full-time PhD is typically 3 years. Part-time PhD programmes generally take longer — around 4 to 5 years. The actual duration depends on your research progress and the requirements of your department. The exact regulations are available in the PhD Ordinance on the NIT Kurukshetra website.
Where do I find the Google Form link to apply?
