1. What is RGIPT and why it matters

Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Petroleum Technology (RGIPT) was established by the Government of India as an Institution of National Importance — the same category as IITs — under the RGIPT Act 2007. It falls under the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas and is India’s only dedicated petroleum and energy domain Institute of National Importance.

Key facts about RGIPT:

  • Established under an Act of Parliament — same legal status as IITs
  • Fully funded by the Government of India through the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas
  • NAAC A+ accredited
  • QS I-Gauge Diamond rated
  • 621 recruitment partners including top energy sector companies
  • Highest placement package: ₹40 LPA
  • Focused exclusively on petroleum, energy, and allied engineering and science domains
Why PhD from RGIPT is prestigious: As an Institution of National Importance comparable to IITs, a PhD from RGIPT carries strong academic credibility — especially in the petroleum, energy, chemical engineering, and geoscience sectors. The institute has strong industry connections with ONGC, IOCL, BPCL, HPCL, Oil India, and Schlumberger. PhD graduates are well-placed for faculty positions, research roles in PSUs, and international oil and gas sector opportunities.

Key conditions for financial assistance:

  • Institute Assistantship is available only for Full Time Regular Registration candidates who have qualified GATE/NET/equivalent
  • RGIPT/IIT B.Tech graduates are exempted from GATE requirement for assistantship eligibility
  • Students receiving assistantship are assigned teaching/research duties of up to 8 hours per week

Prestigious fellowship supplement: Students from the Full Time Regular category who are selected for prestigious national fellowships (such as Prime Minister Research Fellows or similar) receive a 25% supplementary stipend in addition to the regular JRF/SRF stipend from RGIPT. This significantly enhances total monthly income for top-performing research scholars.
NET-LS for humanities: NET-LS (NET with Lectureship eligibility) qualified students with a CPI of 7.0 or 70% marks in their qualifying degree are eligible for Institute Assistantship in the Department of Energy and Human Sciences and the Department of Management Studies. This opens the stipend to non-GATE disciplines like English, Sociology, and Management.

9. Selection process

  1. Application screening based on eligibility
RGIPT screens applications based on qualifying degree, percentage/CPI, fellowship score, and age. Only candidates meeting all criteria are shortlisted for the next stages.
  2. Shortlisting based on GATE/fellowship score and academic record
For GATE-qualifying candidates, shortlisting is primarily based on GATE score and past academic performance. Higher GATE scores improve shortlisting chances significantly, especially in competitive departments like Chemical and Petroleum Engineering.
  3. Written test (if applicable)
RGIPT may conduct a written test in addition to the interview for further shortlisting, especially when the number of applicants is large. The written test covers core subjects of the relevant engineering/science discipline.
  4. Research presentation and personal interview
Shortlisted candidates are called for a personal interview and may be asked to present their proposed research area or previous research work. The interview panel assesses research aptitude, knowledge of the subject area, and clarity of research goals. For Management PhD candidates, WAT (Written Ability Test) may also be included.
  5. Final merit list and admission offer
Final selection is based on GATE/fellowship score, past academic performance, written test performance (if held), and interview. A merit list is published on rgipt.ac.in. Selected candidates receive admission offer letters and must complete registration by the deadline and report physically to the campus.

11. Frequently asked questions

Is RGIPT equivalent to an IIT for PhD purposes?
RGIPT is an Institution of National Importance established under an Act of Parliament — the same legal status as IITs. However, it is not an IIT. In academic circles and industry, RGIPT PhD is well-regarded especially in the petroleum, energy, and chemical engineering sectors — which is RGIPT’s core domain. For PSU and government research positions in the oil and gas sector, a RGIPT PhD is considered a strong qualification. For general academic positions across all engineering domains, IIT PhDs typically carry more prestige.
I have a GATE score in Chemical Engineering. Which departments can I apply to?
With GATE (CH — Chemical Engineering), you can apply to the Chemical Engineering department for PhD. Depending on RGIPT’s cross-discipline rules (which vary by year), you may also be eligible for Petroleum Engineering PhD if your research proposal aligns with petroleum-related chemical engineering. Check the official notification for any cross-discipline eligibility for your specific GATE paper.
What is the difference between Jais, Bengaluru, and Sivasagar for PhD?
Jais is the main campus with the widest range of departments and the most PhD seats. Bengaluru campus has strong industry connections and is better for candidates interested in technology-focused research with energy sector industry collaboration. Sivasagar campus is closer to Oil India Limited’s operations in Northeast India and is particularly relevant for petroleum engineering research with a Northeast focus. The exact departments offering PhD at each campus in 2026 will be specified in the official notification.
Can I do PhD in Management at RGIPT?
Yes. RGIPT’s Department of Management Studies at the Jais campus offers PhD in Management. Eligibility requires an MBA or equivalent postgraduate management degree with 60% marks and a valid CAT/GRE/GMAT/UGC-NET score. The research focus is typically on energy sector management, petroleum industry economics, and related management areas. Work experience in relevant industry is preferred but may not be mandatory — check the current year’s notification.
I am a working professional at an oil PSU. Can I do a sponsored PhD at RGIPT?
Yes. The Sponsored registration category is specifically designed for working professionals whose employers (PSUs, government organisations, or private companies) sponsor their PhD. You need at least 2 years of work experience in the sponsoring organisation. Your employer will continue paying your salary/stipend — RGIPT does not provide Institute Assistantship to sponsored candidates. This is an excellent option for ONGC, IOCL, OIL, BPCL, or HPCL employees who want to pursue research without leaving their job.
What research areas are most active at RGIPT for PhD?
RGIPT’s strongest research areas align with its petroleum and energy mandate: Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) techniques, reservoir simulation, drilling fluid technology, pipeline safety, energy storage systems, renewable energy integration, carbon capture and sequestration, petroleum refining and petrochemicals, geomechanics, and seismic data interpretation. Computer Science researchers working on AI/ML applications for petroleum exploration and production also have strong placement prospects through RGIPT’s network.
