1. What is SSB and what is this recruitment?

Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) is one of India’s Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) under the Ministry of Home Affairs. It is responsible for guarding India’s borders with Nepal and Bhutan. SSB has frontier headquarters, sector headquarters, and battalions spread across many states in northern and northeastern India.

Like all paramilitary forces, SSB operates its own medical facilities at its camps, bases, and frontier headquarters. To provide medical care to SSB personnel and their families, SSB recruits doctors — both General Duty Medical Officers and specialist doctors — on a purely contractual basis.

What does contractual mean? This is not a permanent government job. You are hired on a contract for a fixed period of 3 years. After 3 years, the contract can be extended by up to 2 more years. You do not get government employee status, pension, or allowances as admissible to regular government employees. However, the salary is good and the work gives you experience in a paramilitary medical setup.

2. Two types of posts available

Post 1 — General Duty Medical Officer (GDMO)

A GDMO is a general physician who provides primary medical care to SSB personnel and their families. You will handle routine outpatient cases, basic treatment, referrals, and general medical duties at SSB establishments.

Post 2 — Specialist Doctor

A Specialist is a doctor with a postgraduate degree in a specific medical specialty. SSB is recruiting specialists in the following fields:

  • Medicine
  • General Surgery
  • Obstetrics & Gynaecology (Obs & Gynae)
  • Ophthalmology
  • Radiology
  • Pathology
  • Anaesthesia

3. Salary

Specialist Doctors
₹85,000 / month
GDMOs
₹75,000 / month
Nature of pay
Consolidated
Allowances
None additional
Important about salary: The salary mentioned (₹85,000 for Specialists, ₹75,000 for GDMOs) is a consolidated monthly remuneration. The contractual appointee is not entitled to any allowances, benefits, or concessions as admissible to regular Government employees. No DA, no HRA, no pension — just the fixed monthly amount.

8. Who can apply — qualification

For Specialist Doctors

You must have:

  • A recognised medical qualification included in the First or Second Schedule, or Part II of the Third Schedule of the Indian Medical Council Act, 1956 (other than licentiate qualifications). Holders of educational qualifications included in Part II of the Third Schedule should also fulfil the conditions stipulated in sub-section (3) of section 13 of the Indian Medical Council Act, 1956.
  • A Post-Graduate Degree or Diploma in the concerned specialty as mentioned in Section A or Section B of Schedule VI, or equivalent
  • Experience: 1½ years for Post-Graduate Degree holders and 2½ years for Diploma holders in the concerned specialty after obtaining the PG Degree or Diploma
  • Completion of compulsory rotating internship

For GDMOs

You must have:

  • A recognised medical qualification included in the First or Second Schedule, or Part II of the Third Schedule of the Indian Medical Council Act, 1956 (other than licentiate qualifications)
  • Completion of compulsory rotating internship
Simple explanation: For GDMOs — you need an MBBS degree and completion of your internship. For Specialists — you need MBBS + a postgraduate degree (MD/MS/DNB) or diploma (DGO/DO/etc.) in the relevant specialty, plus at least 1.5 to 2.5 years of experience in that specialty after your PG.

9. Age limit

PostMaximum age limit
GDMO70 years
Specialist70 years
The age limit of 70 years is one of the most generous in any government recruitment in India. This means retired government doctors, retired armed forces medical officers, and senior practitioners with decades of experience can also apply. The SSB specifically wants experienced doctors — not just fresh postgraduates.

10. Medical examination

Candidates who are called for appointment as Specialist or GDMO on contractual basis must appear for an interview and medical examination conducted by a Board of Medical Officers at the concerned Composite Hospital.

The appointment is subject to physical fitness. Candidates must be medically fit as per the standards prescribed by the Board of Medical Officers.

11. How to attend the walk-in interview

There is no online application for this recruitment. The process is straightforward — you walk in on the interview date with all your documents. Here is what you need to do:

  1. Choose your nearest venue and date
Pick one of the four venues — Siliguri (25 May), Guwahati (28 May), Lucknow (01 June), or Patna (04 June). Go to whichever is most convenient for you. You only need to attend one.
  2. Prepare your application in plain paper
Write a plain paper application stating the name of the post you are applying for (GDMO or Specialist) and the State/area/region you are applying for. Superscribe the name of the post applied for on the top of the application.
  3. Collect all original documents and photocopies
Carry originals along with photocopies of: Graduation degree (MBBS), PG degree/diploma (for Specialists), internship completion certificate, age proof, address proof, experience certificate (if applicable), and five recent passport-size photographs. All documents must be self-attested.
  4. Reach the venue by 10:00 AM
Interviews start at 10:00 AM. Reach the venue well before time. Candidates arriving late may not be interviewed. No TA or DA will be paid to any candidate for travelling to the interview — all travel expenses are your own.
  5. Attend the interview and medical examination
The interview is conducted by a Board chaired by a DIG (Medical) officer. If selected at the interview stage, you will also need to appear for a medical examination. The Director General SSB has the final authority on posting locations.
No TA/DA: SSB will not pay any Travelling Allowance or Daily Allowance to any candidate (including those from reserved categories) for attending the walk-in interview. All travel and stay expenses are to be borne by the candidate themselves.

12. Important rules to know

  • Suitable and willing candidates may simply walk in for the interview at the scheduled places with all relevant original documents and self-attested photocopies.
  • The Director General SSB reserves the right to decide the place of posting of the selected Specialist/GDMO — you may be posted anywhere in India.
  • SSB reserves the right to amend, modify, cancel, or revoke the advertisement in part or whole without assigning any reason.
  • This appointment carries with it the liability to serve in any part of the country.
  • The contractual appointee shall not be entitled to any allowances, benefits, or concessions as admissible to regular Government employees.
  • Termination can happen before the contract period ends — by either side — with one month’s notice or one month’s pay.
  • No regularisation or permanent absorption is possible under this appointment.

13. Frequently asked questions

I am a retired government doctor aged 65. Can I apply?
