1. What is a Trade Finance Officer at SBI?

Trade Finance is a specialised area of banking that deals with international trade transactions — Letters of Credit (LC), Bank Guarantees (BG), Bills for Collection, Export/Import financing, and Forex operations. When an Indian company imports machinery from Germany or exports textiles to the USA, the bank facilitates and finances these transactions through trade finance products.

SBI handles a massive volume of international trade transactions every day. A Trade Finance Officer at SBI will:

  • Process Letters of Credit (LC) — both import and export
  • Handle Bank Guarantees and Standby LCs
  • Process Bills for Collection — documentary and clean bills
  • Handle forex remittances and foreign exchange transactions
  • Ensure compliance with FEMA (Foreign Exchange Management Act) and RBI guidelines
  • Verify UCP 600 and URDG rules compliance for trade documents
  • Coordinate with correspondent banks globally
  • Handle trade finance-related customer queries and disputes
MMGS-II grade explained: MMGS stands for Middle Management Grade Scale. MMGS-II is the second tier of SBI’s management hierarchy — one level above a Probationary Officer (JMGS-I). You join SBI directly at the officer level, not as a trainee. This is why experience is mandatory — SBI needs professionals who can handle complex trade finance work from day one.

10. Selection process

Unlike most bank recruitments, there is no written exam for this post. Selection is through:

  1. Shortlisting
SBI will shortlist candidates based on qualification, relevant experience, suitability for the role, and other parameters decided by a bank committee. Merely fulfilling the minimum eligibility does not guarantee shortlisting. Only shortlisted candidates will be called for the interview.
  2. Personal Interview — 100 marks
Shortlisted candidates attend a personal interview. The interview carries 100 marks. The minimum qualifying marks for the interview will be decided by the bank. The interview will test your trade finance knowledge, banking experience, and overall suitability for the role.
  3. Merit list preparation
The final merit list is prepared in descending order based on interview marks only. In case of a tie in marks, candidates with higher age get preference (descending order of age).
  4. Document verification and Medical Examination
Selected candidates must produce all original documents and pass a medical examination as per SBI’s medical standards before joining.
No written exam — selection is entirely through shortlisting and interview. This means your application quality, experience relevance, and interview performance are everything. 14. Frequently asked questions

I work in a private bank in trade finance. Am I eligible?
Yes. The notification says experience in any Scheduled Commercial Bank — which includes private sector banks like HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, Axis Bank, Kotak Bank, and foreign banks like Citi, Standard Chartered, HSBC. As long as your role was in Trade Finance processing in a supervisory or official capacity for at least 2 years, you are eligible.
I do not have the IIBF Forex Operations certificate. Can I still apply?
No. The IIBF Forex Operations certificate is a mandatory essential qualification — not optional. You must hold this certificate, and it must have been issued on or before 30 April 2026. Without this certificate, you are not eligible regardless of your experience or degree.
Is there a written exam I need to prepare for?
No. There is no written exam for this recruitment. Selection is entirely through shortlisting and interview. Your application will be shortlisted based on your experience and qualifications, and if shortlisted, you will attend a personal interview worth 100 marks. Focus your preparation on trade finance knowledge — LC rules, UCP 600, FEMA, RBI trade finance guidelines, and current banking developments.
What is the difference between MMGS-II and a regular SBI PO?
SBI PO (Probationary Officer) joins at JMGS-I grade — the entry level. MMGS-II is one level above that. By joining as a Trade Finance Officer at MMGS-II, you start your SBI career at a higher grade with a higher salary compared to a fresh PO. However, you are in the Specialist Cadre — so you work only in trade finance, not in other banking departments like a general officer would.
Can I transfer to a general banking role after joining as Trade Finance Officer?
No. SBI has explicitly stated that this is a Specialist Cadre post with no provision for conversion into General Cadre. Your entire SBI career will be in the Specialist track within trade finance operations. If you want to work across different banking departments, SBI PO or SBI SO in a different domain would be more suitable.
My experience is in forex remittances and forex operations — does it count as Trade Finance experience?
Forex operations and trade finance are closely related but not identical. Pure forex remittance processing (outward/inward remittances for personal transactions) may not fully satisfy the “Trade Finance processing” requirement. However, forex operations linked to trade — such as export bill negotiation, import LC payments in forex, or forex settlement for trade transactions — would likely qualify. Check the official notification carefully and honestly assess whether your specific role matches the requirement before applying.
