1. What is RRB Technician?

Indian Railways is the largest employer in India and one of the largest railway networks in the world. To keep this massive system running — signals working, electrical systems functioning, tracks maintained, and workshops operating — Indian Railways employs thousands of Technicians across every railway zone.

An RRB Technician is a permanent Group C government employee who handles technical maintenance and repair work in specific departments of Indian Railways. This is a direct recruitment — not a contractual or temporary position.

Two types of Technician posts are being recruited through CEN 02/2026:

Technician Grade 1 Signal
  • Works on railway signalling and telecommunication systems
  • Maintains signal equipment, interlocking systems, and related electronics
  • Higher pay — Pay Level 5 (₹29,200 starting)
  • Higher eligibility — ITI in relevant trade required
  • 323 vacancies in 2026
Technician Grade 3
  • Works in electrical, mechanical, track, workshop and other departments
  • Handles maintenance, inspection, and repair of railway assets
  • Entry-level pay — Pay Level 2 (₹19,900 starting)
  • Open to ITI holders in various trades
  • 6,242 vacancies in 2026
Job security: Both Grade 1 and Grade 3 Technician posts are permanent government positions under Indian Railways. Once selected and confirmed after probation, you have complete job security with regular increments, promotions, and retirement benefits including pension under NPS.

Technician Grade 1 Signal

You must have:

  • Matriculation (Class 10 pass) plus ITI certificate in the relevant trade from a recognised institution
  • OR a Course Completed Act Apprentice in the relevant trade

Technician Grade 3

You must have one of the following:

  • Matriculation (Class 10 pass) plus ITI certificate in a relevant trade from a recognised institution
  • OR Course Completed Act Apprentice in a relevant trade
  • OR for Signal & Telecom (S&T) posts — Class 10+2 with Physics and Mathematics (this means 12th pass candidates are also eligible for specific S&T posts without ITI)
The exact list of relevant trades for each post will be published in the detailed notification on 29 June 2026. Based on previous year notifications, common eligible ITI trades include Electrician, Fitter, Wireman, Electronics Mechanic, Mechanic (Motor Vehicle), Machinist, Welder, Carpenter, Painter, Refrigeration & AC Mechanic, and several others — depending on the specific Technician post you are applying for.
Good news for 12th pass candidates: If you have passed Class 12 with Physics and Mathematics (even without an ITI certificate), you are eligible for certain Technician Grade 3 Signal & Telecom posts. This makes RRB Technician 2026 accessible to a much wider pool of candidates than many people realise.

6. Salary and benefits

RRB Technician is a 7th Pay Commission post. The salary is fixed, permanent, and increases every year with annual increments.

Grade 1 Signal — basic pay
₹29,200/month
Grade 1 — pay level
Level 5
Grade 3 — basic pay
₹19,900/month
Grade 3 — pay level
Level 2
Grade 1 — in-hand (approx)
₹38,000–₹42,000
Grade 3 — in-hand (approx)
₹28,000–₹32,000

In addition to basic pay, Railway Technicians also receive:

  • Dearness Allowance (DA) — currently 53%, revised every 6 months
  • House Rent Allowance (HRA) — 27%, 18%, or 9% based on city category, or railway quarters instead
  • Transport Allowance (TA)
  • Night Duty Allowance — for shifts worked at night
  • Overtime Allowance — for hours worked beyond regular duty
  • Free or subsidised railway quarters at posting location
  • Free railway passes for travel — self and family
  • Medical facilities at railway hospitals for self and dependents
  • NPS pension contributions
  • Children’s education allowance
Free railway passes are one of the most valuable Railway employee benefits. Technicians and their families can travel on Indian Railways for free or at very low cost — up to a certain number of passes per year. This is a benefit that very few other government jobs offer.

7. Selection process

The selection process for RRB Technician 2026 has three stages:

  1. Computer Based Test (CBT) — single stage
Online multiple choice exam. 100 questions in 90 minutes. Covers Mathematics, General Intelligence & Reasoning, General Science, and General Awareness on Current Affairs. Negative marking applies — 1/3 mark deducted for each wrong answer. Minimum qualifying marks: 40% for General/EWS, 30% for SC/ST, 30% for OBC-NCL.
  2. Document Verification (DV)
Candidates shortlisted based on CBT merit are called for Document Verification. You must bring all original documents — ITI certificate, age proof, category certificate (if applicable), marksheets, and caste/income certificate for reserved category candidates.
  3. Medical Examination
After DV, selected candidates must pass a medical examination as per Railway medical standards. The medical standard required depends on the specific post — Signal posts have stricter vision requirements. The medical board’s decision is final.
No interview: There is no personal interview in the RRB Technician selection process. Your final selection is based entirely on CBT merit, subject to document verification and medical fitness. The higher your CBT score, the better your chances.
No Psycho Test (CBAT): Unlike RRB ALP (Assistant Loco Pilot) which has a Psycho/CBAT test, RRB Technician does NOT have this test. The selection is CBT → DV → Medical only. This makes the process simpler and more predictable.

8. Application fee

CategoryApplication fee
General / OBC / EWS — Male candidates₹500
SC / ST candidates₹250 (refunded after appearing in CBT)
PwBD candidates₹250 (refunded after appearing in CBT)
Female candidates — all categories₹250 (refunded after appearing in CBT)

11. Frequently asked questions

I have passed Class 12 with Physics and Maths but no ITI. Can I apply?
Yes — but only for specific Signal & Telecom (S&T) posts under Technician Grade 3. For all other Grade 3 posts, ITI or Apprenticeship is mandatory. The exact S&T posts open to 10+2 candidates will be listed in the detailed notification on 29 June 2026.
I have an engineering diploma (polytechnic). Am I eligible?
A diploma in engineering is equivalent to or higher than an ITI certificate for most purposes. In previous RRB notifications, diploma holders have been eligible for Technician posts. However, the exact eligibility for diploma holders will be confirmed in the detailed CEN 02/2026 notification on 29 June 2026. Check the official notification before applying.
Which RRB zone should I apply through?
Apply through the RRB that covers the region where you want to be posted. For example — if you want a posting in Maharashtra, apply through RRB Mumbai. If you want to be in Madhya Pradesh, apply through RRB Bhopal. You can choose any RRB, but postings are generally in that zone. You can only apply through one RRB — choose carefully.
Is there negative marking in the RRB Technician CBT?
Yes. For every wrong answer, 1/3 of a mark is deducted. Do not guess randomly. If you are not sure about an answer, it is better to leave it blank than to mark a wrong answer and lose marks.
What is the difference between Grade 1 and Grade 3 Technician?
Grade 1 Signal is a higher post — starting pay ₹29,200 at Level 5 — and involves specialised signalling and telecom work. Grade 3 is an entry-level post starting at ₹19,900 at Level 2, covering a wide range of trades across electrical, mechanical, track, and workshop departments. Grade 1 has only 323 vacancies while Grade 3 has 6,242 vacancies.
Can I apply for both Grade 1 and Grade 3 in the same application?
You will need to check the detailed notification for this. In previous RRB technician recruitments, candidates could apply for multiple posts in a single application. However this depends on the specific rules for CEN 02/2026 which will be published on 29 June 2026.
When will the exam date be announced?
The CBT exam date has not been announced yet. The detailed notification on 29 June 2026 may include a tentative exam schedule. Typically, RRB CBT exams are held 3–5 months after the application closing date. So the exam is expected sometime between October 2026 and January 2027. Keep checking rrbapply.gov.in for updates.
