1. CIL MT CBT vs CIL MT GATE — what is the difference?
Coal India has released two separate MT recruitments in 2026. Many candidates confuse them. Here is the simple difference:

Can I apply for both? If you are a Mining Engineer with a GATE 2025 MN score, you can apply for the GATE-based Mining MT (Advt. 01/2026) separately. This CBT-based recruitment (Advt. 03/2026) does not require GATE and covers 9 completely different disciplines. Apply for whichever you are eligible for — or both if applicable.

6. Educational qualification — key points
- All degrees must be full-time regular courses from a recognised University or Institution approved by AICTE / UGC. Distance, correspondence, and online degrees are not valid.
- Minimum marks for General / OBC / EWS candidates: 60% aggregate across all semesters.
- Minimum marks for SC / ST / PwBD candidates: 55% aggregate.
- Final year students whose results are expected by 31 August 2026 can also apply. They must upload marksheets up to the latest available semester. Their results must show the required percentage by the document verification stage.
- For the System discipline specifically: the degree must be First Class (not just 60%) in Computer Science / Computer Engineering / IT or MCA.
- For Geology: you need M.Sc. or M.Tech — a B.Sc. in Geology alone is not sufficient.
- For Company Secretary: any graduation degree + Associate (ACS) or Fellow (FCS) membership of ICSI is required.
7. Exam pattern — Paper I and Paper II
The CBT is conducted in a single sitting of 3 hours. It has two papers of 100 marks each:

No negative marking — this is a major advantage. Attempt every single question. Since there is no penalty for wrong answers, leaving a question blank is always worse than guessing. In major disciplines like Electrical and Civil where cutoffs are high and thousands compete, every mark counts.
Paper II carries the most weight. Since both papers are equal at 100 marks each, your discipline-specific knowledge in Paper II is what separates you from the competition — especially since Paper I (GK, Reasoning, English) tends to have similar scores across candidates in the same discipline. Focus heavily on Paper II subject preparation.

Training period: Selected candidates undergo one year of training-cum-probation. During this period you receive the full basic pay of ₹60,000/month. After successful completion and confirmation, you become a regular executive in E-1 grade. Posting can be anywhere in India — including coalfield areas in Jharkhand, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, West Bengal, and Madhya Pradesh.

Think carefully before applying: If you join Coal India and leave before completing 5 years — for a better job, higher studies, or any reason — you must pay whatever bond amount is remaining. With ₹5,000 deducted monthly, the full ₹3 lakh is recovered after 60 months. If you leave in year 2, you still owe approximately ₹1.8 lakh.
10. Selection process

Computer Based Test (CBT) — Paper I + Paper II
3-hour CBT with 200 MCQ questions total. Paper I covers GK, Reasoning, Numerical, English (100 marks). Paper II covers your discipline-specific professional knowledge (100 marks). No negative marking. Bilingual — English and Hindi. The entire final selection is based on CBT marks only. -
Document Verification (DV)
Candidates shortlisted based on CBT merit list are called for document verification. Produce all original documents — degree, marksheets, age proof, category certificate, and NOC from current employer (if you are a government or PSU employee). -
Initial Medical Examination (IME)
After DV, selected candidates undergo a medical examination by CIL’s Medical Committee. The offer of appointment is issued only after both DV and IME are successfully completed.
No interview at any stage. The final merit list is based solely on total CBT marks. This is a completely objective, merit-based selection. No subjective evaluation — your score determines everything.

I have a B.Tech in Computer Science with 62% marks. Which discipline should I apply for — System or E&T?
Apply under System discipline. System requires B.E./B.Tech in Computer Science / Computer Engineering / IT or MCA — your CS degree qualifies. E&T (Electronics & Telecommunication) is for Electronics & Communication or E&T engineering graduates. A CS degree does not qualify for E&T. Apply for System.
I have an M.Sc. in Geology with 64% marks. Am I eligible?
Yes. Geology discipline requires M.Sc. or M.Tech in Geology / Applied Geology / Geophysics / Applied Geophysics with minimum 60% marks. Your M.Sc. Geology with 64% qualifies. Note — a B.Sc. in Geology alone is not sufficient. You must have a postgraduate degree (M.Sc. or M.Tech) in the geology-related subject.
Is there negative marking in the Coal India MT CBT?
No. There is no negative marking in Coal India MT CBT 2026. Every correct answer gets 1 mark and wrong answers get zero — not a negative mark. This means you should attempt every question. Never leave a question unanswered.
I am a final year B.Tech student. My results come out in July 2026. Can I apply?
Yes. Final year students whose results are expected by 31 August 2026 can apply. Upload your available semester marksheets at the time of application. Your final result must show the required minimum percentage (60% for General/OBC/EWS) when you appear for document verification. If your result is not out by the DV date or you don’t meet the percentage, you will be disqualified.
Can I apply for both Coal India MT CBT (03/2026) and Coal India MT GATE (01/2026)?
The GATE-based recruitment (01/2026) is for Mining Engineering graduates with a GATE 2025 MN score. The CBT-based recruitment (03/2026) is for the 9 other disciplines. If you are a Mining Engineer with GATE 2025 MN score, you would apply under the GATE notification — not this one. Both are separate recruitments with separate application portals and processes. If somehow you qualify for both (unlikely given different disciplines), you could theoretically apply for both, but apply only under the correct discipline for each.
Where will I be posted if selected?
Coal India operates through subsidiary companies across coalfield states — primarily Jharkhand (BCCL, CCL), Odisha and Chhattisgarh (MCL, SECL), West Bengal (BCCL), and Madhya Pradesh (WCL). You select three subsidiary preferences at the time of application. Final posting is decided by CIL management based on vacancy availability. I have an MA in Hindi with 62% marks but only 47% in graduation. Am I eligible for Rajbhasha?
No. For Rajbhasha discipline, both conditions must be met — MA in Hindi with minimum 60% marks AND minimum 50% in graduation with Hindi and English as main subjects. Your graduation percentage of 47% does not meet the 50% minimum. You are not eligible.
