1. What is this job and what will you do?

NTPC Limited (National Thermal Power Corporation) operates power plants across India. Running a large power plant has a big impact on the surrounding environment — air, water, land, and communities. To manage this responsibly, NTPC employs dedicated Environment Management Officers at every plant and project site.

As an Assistant Officer (Environment Management) at NTPC, your main responsibilities will include:

  • Monitoring air quality, water quality, and noise levels at NTPC plants
  • Ensuring the plant meets all pollution control norms set by the Government
  • Managing effluent treatment, ash disposal, and waste management
  • Preparing environmental compliance reports for regulatory authorities
  • Interacting with the State Pollution Control Board and Central Pollution Control Board
  • Coordinating environmental impact assessments for new projects
  • Implementing green initiatives and environmental improvement programmes

This is a permanent executive position in the E0 grade — the entry level of NTPC’s executive cadre. You will have good growth opportunities within NTPC as you gain experience.

Good news for non-engineering graduates: Unlike most PSU engineering jobs, this post is also open to non-engineering graduates who have done a postgraduate degree (M.Sc., M.Tech, PG Diploma) in an environment-related subject. You do not need a B.Tech to apply — see the qualification section below for full details.

5. Educational qualification — two ways to qualify

Unlike most engineering PSU jobs, this post has two different qualification routes. You can qualify through either Option A or Option B:

Option A — Engineering graduates

A full-time Graduate Engineering Degree in Environment (B.E./B.Tech in Environmental Engineering or related) with a minimum of 60% marks from a recognised University or Institution.

Option B — Non-engineering graduates with a postgraduate degree

A full-time Graduation in any discipline with a minimum of 60% marks, plus a full-time postgraduate qualification in an environment-related subject with a minimum of 60% marks. The postgraduate qualification can be any of the following:

  • PG Degree in Environment Engineering / Environment Science / Environmental Management
  • PG Diploma in Environment Engineering / Environment Science / Environmental Management
  • M.Sc. in Environment Engineering / Environment Science / Environmental Management
  • M.Tech with specialisation in Environment Engineering / Environment Science / Environmental Management
Simple example: If you have a B.Sc. in Chemistry or Biology with 60% marks, and then did an M.Sc. in Environmental Science with 60% marks — you are eligible under Option B. You do not need a B.Tech to apply for this post.
Important: All qualifications must be full-time and from a University or Institution recognised by an appropriate statutory authority in India (UGC/AICTE). Distance, correspondence, online, or part-time degrees are not valid for this technical post. SC/ST/PwBD candidates need a minimum of 55% marks for vacancies identified for them.

6. Salary and benefits

Selected candidates are placed in the E0 Grade — the entry level of NTPC’s executive pay structure.

7. Selection process

The selection for NTPC Assistant Officer (Environment Management) 2026 is a three-stage process:

  1. Application Shortlisting / Screening
NTPC will screen all applications based on educational qualification percentage and other parameters. Only shortlisted candidates are called for the written test. NTPC may also raise the eligibility bar for shortlisting if a very large number of applications are received.
  2. Online Written Test — 85% weightage
The written test has two parts: Subject Knowledge Test (SKT) — tests your knowledge of environmental engineering, pollution control, environmental laws, and related subjects; and Executive Aptitude Test (EAT) — tests general reasoning, numerical ability, and English. The written test carries 85% of the total weightage in final selection. Prepare well — this stage is the most important.
  3. Personal Interview — 15% weightage
Candidates who clear the written test are called for a Personal Interview. This carries 15% of the total weightage. Your technical knowledge, communication, and overall suitability for the role are assessed here.
  4. Medical Examination
Candidates who are finally selected must pass a pre-employment medical examination by NTPC’s medical board before joining. The medical board’s decision is final.
Final merit = Written Test (85%) + Interview (15%). Since the written test carries such high weightage, strong preparation in environmental subjects is the key to getting selected. Do not treat this as just an application — start preparing for the Subject Knowledge Test.

8. Application fee

CategoryApplication fee
General (UR), EWS, OBC-NCL — Male candidates₹500 (non-refundable)
SC / ST candidatesNo fee — exempted
PwBD candidatesNo fee — exempted
Female candidates — all categoriesNo fee — exempted

  • All qualifications must be full-time from recognised universities or institutions. Distance, online, or part-time degrees are not accepted for this post.

11. Frequently asked questions

I have a B.Sc. in Zoology and an M.Sc. in Environmental Science — both with 60%. Am I eligible?
Yes. Under Option B, you need a graduation in any discipline with 60% marks AND a PG qualification in an environment-related subject with 60% marks. B.Sc. Zoology + M.Sc. Environmental Science meets this criteria, as long as both are full-time degrees from recognised institutions.
I have a B.Tech in Civil Engineering. Can I apply?
Not directly under Option A — that requires a B.Tech specifically in Environmental Engineering. However, if you also have an M.Tech in Environmental Engineering or Environmental Management with 60% marks, you can apply under Option B — using your B.Tech (Civil) as the graduation and your M.Tech as the postgraduate qualification. Both must have 60% marks.
Is this a fresher job or do I need experience?
This is open to freshers. Unlike the NTPC Engineer (Contracts & Materials) post which requires 4 years of experience, the Assistant Officer (Environment Management) post does not mention any work experience requirement. Fresh graduates and postgraduates are eligible to apply.
How is the written test structured?
The written test has two parts. The Subject Knowledge Test (SKT) tests your technical knowledge of environmental engineering, pollution control, environmental laws, and related topics. The Executive Aptitude Test (EAT) tests general reasoning, numerical ability, and English. The written test carries 85% weightage in the final selection — so it is the most critical stage of this recruitment.
My M.Sc. is from a distance education university. Am I eligible?
No. NTPC has clearly stated that all qualifications must be full-time. Distance education, correspondence, or online degrees are not valid for this technical post. Your M.Sc. must be a regular full-time programme from a recognised university.
I am a woman from the OBC category. Do I need to pay the application fee?
No. Female candidates of all categories — General, OBC, SC, ST, EWS — are completely exempt from the application fee. You pay nothing to apply.
What is the difference between E0 and E2 grade at NTPC?
E0 is the entry level for Assistant Officers — starting basic pay is ₹30,000 per month with a scale going up to ₹1,20,000. E2 is a higher grade for Engineers — starting basic pay is ₹50,000 per month going up to ₹1,60,000. As you gain experience and get promoted at NTPC, you move from E0 to higher grades like E1, E2, E3, and so on.
The last date is 22 May 2026. Is there any chance of extension?
NTPC has not announced any extension. Assume the deadline is firm and apply before 22 May 2026. Do not wait for the last day — portal traffic is usually very high on the final day and there can be technical issues.
